Fandom has been making me a little cranky lately. Doctor Who has never been a perfect show, and there have been good and bad things about this most recent series.

But sometimes, you just want to spend time in a bubble of squee and think about the hard stuff later. And today, with the finale airing, I feel like squeeing.

My reaction: I have not seen such a glorious mess since TPO/TBB, and I loved every minute of it. I literally squeed (yes, I'll admit it) at the reveal of how the Doctor survived, and apparently loud enough to startle [livejournal.com profile] columbina, who came downstairs to check to make sure everything was fine. "It's okay," I said. "Steven Moffat is a fucking genius."

One of the things I loved most about this episode was the way it was crammed full with beautiful eye candy: trains cutting through the Gherkin and the pyramids; hot-air balloon-cars; Amy's drawings. And could Karen Gillan have been more gorgeous in this episode? I don't know how.

But really, all I wanted was to be entertained, and I was, ridiculously so, for forty-five minutes. I realize this isn't a deeply considered reaction, but you know what? I'm going to do that later.

Anyway, as part of the official squee facilitation process, I made cupcakes. Pretty cupcakes. Vegan cupcakes, because why not?

Squee bubble cupcakes

They're Post-Punk Kitchen's vanilla bean cupcakes filled with vegan lemon curd and frosted with vegan buttercream in a festive mix of white and pink with silver and pink sugar sprinkles, because how can you have a squeeful cupcake without sprinkles? Okay, I suppose maybe all cupcakes are squeeful, but sprinkles add that little bit of extra squee.

Hmm, the word "squee" is starting to look funny. But who cares? I HAVE CUPCAKES. And anyone who wants to join me in the squee bubble is welcome to share.

Your cupcakes look fantastic and DOCTOR WHO WAS SO SO SO MUCH FUN!!! It was a mess, but a fantastic/brilliant/geronomio/homage to steampunk mess of SQUEE!!

(If you had asked me about The Doctor/River post Forest of the Dead, I would have been annoyed, but Eleven/River is excellent. They can flirt/make-out/get married all they like.)

Would you venture: best of the series? (Karen's HAIR deserves its own squee post.)

I have to ask, what's in confectioner's sugar that makes it non-vegan? Why do you have to make your own?

Wow, that's pretty radical. There's another side to the use of immigrant labor to harvest cane sugar. I used to clear the workers into the country from places like Trinidad and Jamaica. They were legal. They clamored to be allowed to come every year. The money they made in two months fed their families for the whole year. Now, since protesters demanded the sugar companies pay them more, they no longer come at all. Big Sugar automated the harvesting process, which turned out to be cheaper. It's not necessarily a better method, but it works. And the workers are out of a job. Sometimes, people don't stop to consider both sides of the story. Big Sugar is not a charity. It's a business. They live by the bottom line, same as every other industry. It's not ideal, but it's what it is. I don't think anybody's better off from this action, certainly not the cane cutters.

*tries not to look at spoilers*

Thanks for the vegan buttercream link! If my meringues fail due to lack of whisk (HOW IS IT THAT OUR ELECTRIC BEATER BROKE TWO YEARS AGO AND NO ONE TOLD ME?) I'll have enough ingredients leftover to make that instead.

Thanks for the tip!

Since I also forgot to get baking paper yesterday, I plan to venture out of the house after I leave the dairy-free condensed milk to cool. Hopefully one of the local dollar stores will have a $10 beater that won't burn the house down.

Oh my god. I can have those cupcakes, except for the frosting (can't have dairy or soy). I am dying for sweets over here ... I will be making those very soon. Thank you!
