Oh, god, I can't even fathom making meringue without an electric mixer or beaters. My RSIs would kill me.
If you do make this vegan buttercream, whomp the hell out of the shortening and liquid. My frosting still has some points where it's starting to break a little bit, probably because I was impatient with the initial whomping.
